Brisbane brings in bollards

In order to take a step towards safety, bollards have been installed around potential terrorist targets in Brisbane. The council has installed concrete bollards at Queen Street Mall, King George Square and the Australian Federal Police building. Not only are these protective measures only a temporary solution, pedestrians have complained labelling them an eyesore. According to safety experts, some key areas such as South Bank and Caxton Street should also have protective security barriers around them. Military level protection

Historic buildings and sites in Australia are an important part of our heritage, and many of them continue to be used for modern purposes. Camp Road Military Base commonly known as the Broadmeadows Maygar Barracks is a good example of how a century old military base still has significance today. The base was used for the first time in 1914 at the onset of the Great War after having been purchased by the Department of Defence. Since then, it has served as a hunting club and even a hostel in the sixties. Despite its age, the Broadmeadows barracks is still an important milita  ...read more

Tasmania calls for Bollards

Hobart Lord Mayor, Sue Hickey recently proposed some hard security measures for Hobart given the recent vehicle attacks in cities around the world. She suggested the installation of bollards in Hobart’s hotspots such as the Salmanca Market, The Farmgate Market and areas which host annual events such as the Taste of Tasmania. She also urged people to not assume they were safe just because they lived in Tasmania. Earlier this month Melbourne’s Lord Mayor, Robert Doyle announced he had enough of oBike’s and threatened to have them removed from the city. "We work hard to keep the city free of clutter. They are clutter and that must be fixed," Cr Doyle said. "Frankly I'm tired of seeing them left on various footpaths in and around the city, either left where their journey ended, or occupying public bike parks”. Charlottesville shows the need for Safe Zones

The incident in Charlottesville, Virginia where a man rammed a car through a protest killing one person and injuring 32 others makes us think about the need for creating safety zones for the people. Not just a public protest but any area which has a large number of people gathered together is vulnerable to attack, specially from vehicles ramming into pedestrians.   ...read more
